Where the Word Sonder Comes From
Sonder is not an old dictionary word. It was coined in 2012 by writer John Koenig for his project The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, which invents terms for feelings that lack a name. Koenig defined sonder as the realization that each passing stranger is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. Because the word is modern and invented, a sonder tattoo carries no ancient tradition or religious weight. Its meaning comes entirely from that single definition and from what the wearer brings to it. Knowing the origin matters, since some people assume it has deeper etymological roots than it actually does.
